Good point, how do you make an OpenSocial gadget? I have looked at the documentation (http://code.google.com/apis/opensocial/) and could not find anything that was specific to Friend Connect. The directory I linked to is not even a Google resource. Google often does this, there different projects do not talk to each other. I am still waiting to be able to export my AdSense reports straight into Google Docs instead of downloading them and uploading it to Google Docs. Maybe it is because the OpenSocial gadgets are just not complete enough to work in Friend Connect? I think Google rushed it out the door to try and keep up with Facebook but adding Facebook Connect to a site is not exactly easy yet either.

Nicely done Lee. You've addressed the questions that I think a lot of people have.

I've added Friend Connect to my blog, and it is fun interacting with the people who sign up to be a member on my site. Other than the "Wall" gadget, there isn't much to foster interaction though.

I posted a question in the Google Friend Connect group to find out more about creating Friend Connect gadgets, and the response was a link to the Open Social page.

But it seems like OpenSocial gadgets must utilize some specific things to be Friend Connect aware. I'm looking forward to new gadgets, but it isn't clear to me how I would actually be able to make one.

Thanks for dropping by and joining! I took a brief look at your WordPress plugin. I will have to try it out. Once the OpenSocial apps start to work Friend Connect could be great, not that it is bad now, just needs more.

You pretty much hit the nail on the head in this article. Wonderful idea, needs more development; And it's being done, both by Google and independent developers. It's just not that apparent yet.

The Social Arrow has some resources for the average webmaster in the form of a gadget page, resource page and Wordpress Plugin. Google Friend Connect is still in Beta, and perhaps already showing signs of reshaping the internet landscape.
